Linking the Five Deeps
The Five Deeps and the other areas we will explore are deep subduction zones, fracture zones and hole. The species that inhabit them are often endemic to one particular site. We can therefore examine isolated populations and their genetic differences between the deeper location as and relationships between species found over larger shallower areas.
The areas we will explore can be considered as underwater inverted mountain ranges, slowly merging together or spreading apart over geological timescales and therefore offer an unprecedented opportunity to study the evolution of species.
